Wooden model ships have been in existence for a long time. Even during the times of the Ancient Egyptians, their ship-builders made wooden models which were scaled down models of the real ships.
Discovering these ships from those times amply proves that model ship building was also a hobby since time immemorial.
If you are interested in wooden model ship building, rest assured that there is no more satisfying hobby. There are two methods to build a wooden model ship. One is to build them by using plans and the other is to buy a kit.
There are many kinds of wooden model ships you can build. You could build the easy sail boat to a slightly more difficult yacht. You could build a boat used by the ancient Vikings, Egyptians, Greeks, and the Romans. There are plans available for all kinds of ships – schooners, fishing boats, dhows, and even warships.
If you are fascinated by any particular ship – lets say a World War II ship U.S.S America – just Google that and you will be able to get plans for that. Some may be free but that is not likely all the time.
Wooden ship models can be built using kits or from the ground up. If you are taking the second option you should prepare yourself for a long time in your work-shop which can sometimes be very frustrating.
Let me caution you that building a model wooden ship is not that easy. It does require a fair bit of knowledge in wood working and engineering. If you do have that it should not be very difficult for you. Bt even if you do have some knowledge but if you are a first timer in this ship -building exercise I would suggest that you get yourself a wooden ship model kit.
The difference being that in the kit you get all the parts and you only have to put them together. You will not need any specialised tools unlike building from scratch using a plan.
Even among the kits available there are kits for the first timer, the intermediate level and the expert. It is recommended that you get yourself a kit which is easier to handle with precise instructions. It is no fun getting something which is too difficult to construct! Your love for the hobby will disappear even before you started. The first time will always be a bit difficult and confusing. But keep at it and you will get the hang of it.
After you have worked with the entry level kits you can work your way up the ladder adding on ships which are more elaborate and complex.
Upon completion of radical prostatectomy, the surgeon needs to reconstruct the urinary system. More specifically, the urologist must reattach the open bladder neck to the urethra. This reconnection of 2 tubular structures is referred to as an anastamosis. The anastamosis is routinely performed with suture, either in a continuous or interupted manner. In the recent years, self-retaining sutures have been developed to help prevent back-slipping of suture and thus a loss of tissue tension. The novel engineering of the suture with unidirectional barbs helps maintain suture position in soft tissues. With conventional suture, there is often a loss of tension which may lead to urine leakage at the anastamosis. One of such self-retaining sutures (SRS) is called VLoc and made by Covidien. It is also unique in that it is an absorbable suture and has its own self-anchoring loop, thus eliminating the need for knot tying. We have now incorporated the VLoc suture in our robotic radical prostatectomy cases. It has helped reduce anastamosis time and facilitated the anastamosis process for our nursing team. If you have used a gas engine-powered push lawn mower, you have already operated a vertical shaft engine. Due to the relative availability of old vertical shaft engines, they make an economical choice for the power source of a home made go kart. But, anyone who has built or tried to build a go kart from a lawnmower engine has faced a fundamental mechanical problem. The vertical rotation of the engine must be converted to horizontal rotation in order to turn the wheels of the go kart. This is not as simple as turning the engine on its side as carburetion techniques of almost all lawnmower engines do not allow operation in anything other than the upright position. This article will explain some ways how to use a vertical engine for go karts.
The pioneers of the outboard motor industry also had to address the problem of transferring vertical rotation to horizontal rotation. One solution to the problem of how to use a vertical engine for go karts takes a page out of outboard motor construction. In an outboard motor, the vertical engine turns a shaft that turns bevel gears attached to the shaft of the propeller. The key is use of the bevel gears – a set of gears designed to transfer rotational power to a defined angle and thus transferring vertical rotation to horizontal rotation. A go kart builder would be lucky to have at his/her disposal bevel gears salvaged from an old outboard motor to implement into the design of the go kart.
A simpler solution to the problem involves the use of a simple belt and pulley system. The go kart builder would attach pulleys to the vertical engines drive shaft and to the axle of the go kart. Then, a belt would be attached to both pulleys. Vertical rotation is transferred to horizontal rotation through a twist in the belt. Unfortunately, this method of how to use a vertical engine for go karts is not as dependable. The belt would be subject to slippage and breakage, as most belts are not intended to be twisted while in motion.
This article explained two methods of using a lawnmower engine in the construction of a go kart. There are surely several other methods of solving the vertical rotation to horizontal rotation engineering problem, but these two methods would be the most economical and practical for a home hobbyist. The use of bevel gears in go kart construction is more reliable as long as construction is precise, but construction is more complicated and expensive. The twisted belt and pulley method is easy and cheap, but not really reliable. It is up to the builder of the go kart to determine which method they would prefer to use.
